Bike Back to School Safely with Youngblood Bicycles
It’s not unusual for Mom and Dad to turn the keys of their trusty, beloved car over to their college student in August. If your son or daughter, however, is open to saving some dinosaur bones and preventing the Freshman 15 by biking to school, dust off your old road bike in the garage and treat them to a bike tune-up and safety gear as a back-to-school gift.
Our bike shop offers a variety of bike repair services and accessories to ensure your student is safe both on and off campus. Here are a few tips to help your student get ready:
Review rules of the road. Ok, this may lead to an eye-roll for being a Captain Careful, however it’s important to know signaling turns and stopping at stop sign etiquette in order to ride predictably among car traffic and pedestrians. Teach your children to stay predictable and aware while riding, anticipating any obstacles ahead.
Tune up the bike. Some campuses offer free tune-ups. It’s important to know that while you can’t beat free, these services might be performed by well-intentioned volunteers who don’t have certified bike mechanic experience. Minimize risk by visiting our local bike shop for a tune-up or repairs.
Gear up safely. Key items to ensure a safe ride – and storage – are a well-fitting helmet, reflectors, lights, and a strong, solid bike lock. We have a variety of these items in stock at our Asheville bike shop.
We’re running a back-to-school bike tune-up special through September 15, 2017: With a tune-up, customers will receive a free pair of tires (up to $50 in value). Come see us soon!
